An Introduction to Coding Courses for Women
At Hackbright Academy, we believe coding courses should be accessible to everyone, though, we have found that women don’t always feel comfortable pursuing careers as software engineers or programmers since the field is made up of mostly men. That’s why our mission is to change the ratio of women to men in the technology industry, and, one way we do this is by offering women-only coding courses, such as our Prep and Software Engineering programs. But, why should you choose an all-women coding course as opposed to the available alternatives?
Overcome Feelings of Inadequacy Stemming from Imposter Syndrome
If you don’t know, imposter syndrome is the belief or feeling that you don’t belong in a position or place based on your own merit and skill. Women entering the tech industry can be affected by imposter syndrome, especially in development courses where they are the only woman.
But, what happens when you aren’t the only woman? In fact, what happens when all of your peers are women who are just as excited about technology and programming as you are? We think this situation can make it easier to deal with imposter syndrome and its associated feelings.
Make Sure Your Voice Is Heard on Coding Projects You’re a Part Of
Since women are a minority in the technology industry, they may not always be heard, or they may be misinterpreted and their contributions may be viewed in a different light. This can be true for those working in the field or those studying to become a part of a tech company.
But, if you enter an all-women coding course, you can remove these possible perceptions and misinterpretations on projects you’re a part of. Feedback and discussions won’t need to be clouded by questions of belonging, equality, or dismissiveness. Your voice can be heard.
Be Supported and Offer Support to Other Phenomenal Women Coders
One of the main focuses of the courses at Hackbright is the supportive community, and we’d love if you’d become a part of it. Our alumnae continue to be a part of Hackbright upon graduation by becoming mentors to current students and by attending ongoing events.
From day one in a coding course for women, you can make a difference to yourself and to those women around you who may be looking for the same educational opportunities as you. These courses are important if we ever want to make a difference in tech by changing the ratio.
