Hackbright Academy Visits Square, Meets Their Engineers

This week, students in the summer 2013 session of Hackbright Academy meet engineers at Square over food and drink, learning about the stack and hearing from the engineers about life at Square.

Square engineers Vida Ha, Erica Kwan and Jack Danger Canty talked about the stack at Square, how it works without the Internet and more.

The engineers talked about life at Square, from the Town Hall meetings on Friday afternoons with founder Jack Dorsey to the tight-knit work culture of Square. They also talked about mentorship at Square and gave advice to newer programmers:

How to find a mentor? “Find people you respect and ask them questions, spend time with them, get coffee with them.”

Erica helpfully added “I learned how to ask for favors when I needed help”. She is an early Square employee who helped build their infrastructure from the ground up, and a fan of the collaborative work culture at Square.

Thanks to Square for hosting the students of Hackbright Academy for the reception in their library! We enjoyed meeting and learning from your engineers, and look forward to seeing having Square at Hackbright Academy’s Career Day this summer. To recruit from our current class of Hackbright students, your company can become a partner company of Hackbright Academy too!
