Hackbright Celebrates LGBTQIA+ History Month

Pride Month is an important time, not just because of what the month itself represents, but also because it’s a time to reflect on how we should act during the rest of the year.

So let’s talk about Pride Month and what Hackbright Academy does to keep the spirit of LGBTQIA+ Pride alive all year-long.

Hackbright Academy Stands With The LGBTQIA+ Community Every Month

Hackbright Celebrates LGBT History Month 1

Hackbright Academy stands with the LGBTQIA+ community not just during Pride Month, but every month. We’re proud of our LGBTQIA+ students, grads, and allies, and the work they do, not just here, but throughout their careers after graduation.

Hackbright also boasts a strong alumni community that includes many LGBTQIA+ grads and allies. When students have specific questions, we try to connect them with an alum who has been in similar circumstances so that the alum can best-support the student and their needs. Sometimes that support looks like questions regarding their career path, and sometimes that support looks like creating a greater sense of belonging and community among underrepresented students.

We’ve partnered with organizations such as Lesbians Who Tech in the past to give out scholarships to help further promote diversity and inclusion.

At Hackbright Academy, we also have high expectations regarding how our students choose to build community with one another inside and outside of the classroom.

Community building can look like a lot of different things. And that includes setting certain boundaries to make sure that the community can learn together safely. At Hackbright Academy, not only do we try to connect like-minded and like-experienced people together, but we also actively work against institutionalized discrimination and harassment in all forms.

  • Discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Posting (or threatening to post) other people’s personally identifying information (“doxing”).
  • Personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms.
  • Violent threats or language directed against another person.
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
  • Repeated harassment of others. In general, if someone asks you to stop, then stop.

That’s because we beleive that students have the right not to be discriminated against based on sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status, sexual orientation, and more.

We’re dedicated to our goal to #ChangeTheRatio in tech and make this space more inclusive for everyone. To that end, we strive to make Hackbright Academy an inclusive place every day of the year.

Whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, you’re more than welcome to apply, enroll, and join our Hackbright Academy community. Together we can work on new skills, work toward new careers, and support one another as we change the ratio in tech.
