Meet Alex Katkova: Instructor for Hackbright’s Part-Time Prep Course

Alex Katkova is an instructor  for Hackbright Academy’s Part-Time Prep Course. Since earning a doubled-major in computer science and cognitive science, she currently holds a full-stack role at a startup in the consumer loyalty space. Prior to that, she worked for a hospitality messaging app, and on Gmail and Google Wallet. She loves teaching and mentoring people to achieve their fullest potential!

What motivated you to teach at Hackbright Academy?
I missed being a teaching assistant in college and wanted to have an impact on others’ lives. Teaching is exhilarating and a lot of fun.

What will students learn in the  Part-Time Course course?
Students will learn the foundations of programming and Python. They’ll learn a new way of problem solving and how to work with other students to communicate their ideas.

Why do you think it’s important to have these skill sets?
I think that many skills that are learned through programming are applicable to other fields. Even a basic understanding of how a program is written will help to elucidate software encountered in the wild.

How is learning at Hackbright different than learning somewhere else?

Hackbright has a very supportive atmosphere – questions are encouraged and staff members are available to help pretty much whenever you need them.

What inspires you?
I’m inspired by people who never stop learning and are not afraid to make changes to their lives. Being around students doing that very thing at Hackbright is quite motivational.

What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I love spending time outside. I’ve taken many trips to national parks to go hiking. I bake on the weekends and play in a social bowling league.

What’s one thing people don’t know about you
I once auditioned for a Drum Corps flag line!
