Intro to Programming student April Chu explains how she decided to pull the trigger on her desire to learn to code. Now that the course is over, she’s thinking of building her own app or even transitioning into a new career! You can check out her original post on LinkedIn.

My first coding project in Python!

I signed up for my first programming class this Fall with Hackbright. It was out of natural curiosity that drove me to want to learn to code. Despite the fact that I come from a family of engineers, I knew nothing about programming before my class! I am a marketer and interact with sales not engineers or developers.

I can’t believe after almost three months, I know how to code. I can truthfully say I enjoy it. I never knew it could be mentally stimulating. Coding has helped me to think differently, better understand the computer, but most importantly, coding has empowered me. There is no better feeling than seeing something come to life in front of you after hours of mapping, thinking, and debugging. Especially when your code can entertain, delight or be of a resource to someone and make their life easier.

Here is my Hackbright Academy coding project – have fun! You will need to have python installed on your computer to engage with the game on your computer’s terminal. Otherwise, enjoy the code write-up.

My coding journey does not stop here. I am planning to learn full-stack web development next year. Also, my classmates and I want to band together to build an app. I welcome your ideas! I hope my story inspires you to go after that little idea that has been sitting in the back of your mind because you never know what path it will take you on. Like Jack Welch always say, ‘Never stop learning. Continue to reinvent yourself’.
