TGIF: Are women in tech on the rise?

TGIF! This week we took a look at the status of women in tech. We’ve seen women in tech take the forefront in the news – gaining recognition, power, and status. But are these wins representative of the whole?

Check back at the end of each week for our Friday finds. Here’s what we’re reading – November 16.

Representation and recognition

Watch: The Rising Power of Women in Tech on The Wall Street Journal and read: Can A TV Comedy Show Change The Game For Women In Tech? by Rebecca Vogels for Forbes.

It’s hard to believe 2018 is almost at an end. The year has been tumultuous, to put it gently, but out of all the bad news and chaos, this year has also been an unofficial “Year of the Woman.” More than ever, women’s voices have been heard, stories told, and obstacles acknowledged.

Has it helped?

The short answer would be yes. Yes, it’s helpful and important to keep sharing our stories, supporting each other, and pushing for change. The long answer is a little muddier. Certain stories are heard, but there are millions of underrepresented or unheard voices. Progress is made for a few, but what about for the many?

In this weeks’ roundup, we watched speakers from the WSJ Tech Conference discuss the positive trends in the workplace that have helped women in tech (and other industries) forge forward. The second piece from Forbes takes a less optimistic view on progress for women, but offers some insightful thoughts and plans to help continue the fight for gender equality.
