Truths About Being a Software Engineer
We just wanted to take a moment and share some truths about being a software engineer, since it can sometimes feel like an ambiguous title. Of course, every software engineer is different, so let’s just get it out of the way that these aren’t the end-all-be-all of software-engineer-tidbits.
Now, here are some things we’ve noticed about being a software engineer.
Gear Up for Being Lonely All the Time… Right?
While we’re sure that some software engineers find lonely positions (that they may love), we’ve seen plenty of Hackbright alumnae come to the realization that they’re future roles can be just as collaborative and social as other office jobs. It’s true that you can’t run away from meetings.
I Mean, As a Software Engineer, You’re Basically a Mathematician
Tell your friends and family to stop bugging you to hire a professional math tutor because while software engineering does require some math, it’s not filled with equation after equation. Depending on the programming language you use, figuring out your problems may be as simple as remembering the semicolon. (Of course, Hackbright is centered on Python, so… not.)
What Do You Mean, You Can’t Hack the Mainframe and Slip In?
We’ve all seen the sensationalized Hollywood portrayals of any main character with a laptop and a USB drive being able to HACK into anywhere and do anything within a matter of seconds.
Cue: “I’m in!”
Let’s just remember to make people believe we have that power but choose not to use it.
Right?… Okay, this truth is really just for fun.
