Alexandra Dobkin

Investment Analyst to Software Engineer, Bloomberg
I noticed that my favorite thing I did on the job wasn't in my job description....I felt there was a misalignment with my interest and skills and what was valuable to the role. That's when I decided to switch careers and become a software engineer.

“Early on in college, I got into the mindset that Finance was the end all be all. Once I started working in the field, I noticed that my favorite thing I did on the job wasn’t in my job description — I loved building an Excel model to predict what we should invest in. As valuable as my model was, a promotion at work wouldn’t lead to me building more Excel models. I felt there was a misalignment with my interest and skills and what was valuable to the role.”

“I love Hackbright and knew that I wanted to get into coding, but I was just a little bit intimidated by the fact that the software engineering fellowship was 3 months, full-time; I wasn’t ready to make that type of commitment just yet so I took this course to test the waters and build up my skillset!”

Everyone needs a little fun

I am bored with this

To decompress, Alexandra loves “to hang out with friends, work out, watch terrible TV (love reality TV), read, volunteer…”

“After taking the part-time course, I knew that I wanted to pursue the fellowship so that I could do something different with my professional life. I no longer felt fulfilled at my job. I immediately fell in love with Hackbright: the supportive community, collaborative learning environment, the high number of external partnerships…I enjoyed every day at Hackbright. I would tell my mom “today’s a good day because Hackbright.”

“I was ecstatic when I got my job offer from Bloomberg! I didn’t just go to Hackbright to have an engaging academic experience. I went to change careers! And the fact that I was able to secure a full-time job as a software engineer shortly after completing the program further proved to me it was a GREAT investment.”
