Leaders at tech startups are alarmed by the absence of women from mission-critical roles — software engineering, especially — at their own companies. Their boards are saying, “We gave you the money to grow, grow, grow, but you’re not. You don’t have the engineers to get it done.” The board can’t miss that you only seem able to hire men. So your dev team is shorthanded.

With more than a quarter million software developer jobs to fill nationwide, tech employers need to close the gap and coding boot camps present a possible solution. San Francisco has 13 accelerated software coding schools, tied for most in the nation according to Course Report, a website that publishes statistics and reviews on the coding industry. The camps charge applicants an average of $12,000 and up to $21,000 to learn to be a junior software engineer in about 12 weeks. Besides meeting employers’ insatiable need for programmers, the schools say their fast-paced camps churn out software engineers who look different from the computer science graduates that dominate Silicon Valley’s ranks.

Think back to the last time you were asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Now think about why you gave the answer you did. When you’re young, you don’t know what you don’t know — and you can’t aspire to be something you don’t know either. Our early career preferences are shaped by what we read about or watch, what we learn in school and most directly, what we see the people around us doing for a living. Today, research suggests that the presence of role models isn’t just essential to defining students’ dream jobs, but to rectifying the IT industry’s gender disparity.
