Course Report Spotlights Hackbright Mentor Rob Slifka

TGIF! This weekend we are celebrating the birthdays of two very important women in tech history: Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper. As such, we’d like to give a little shout out to these women by sharing a few facts about them. If you’re looking for some career inspiration, these women will surely give you the motivation to #changetheratio.

Ada Lovelace

Birthday: December 10, 1815

Ada Lovelace is known in history for being the first computer programmer. She was the very first to understand that a machine had applications beyond calculation. She was, in fact, the first person to create an algorithm for said machine, making her the first to see the full potential of a “computing machine.”

A quote by Lovelace that we love:

“The more I study, the more insatiable do I feel my genius for it to be.”

Learning is so important. It opens up so many opportunities for us in careers, and motivates us to continue to learn all that we can to be women who inspire.

Happy Birthday, Ada! You’re an inspiration.

Grace Hopper

Birthday: December 9, 1906

Grace Hopper was an inventor, innovator and United States Navy rear admiral. She promoted education through attaining her Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University, and through pursing a life-long career of changing computer programming history. She invented one of the first compiler related tools, and inspired the idea that machines can have independent programming languages. She inspired COBOL, which is still used today.

A quote by Hooper that we love:

“A ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”

We are powerful and have the ability to change tech history. But, in order to do that, we need to put ourselves in situations where we can learn and share our talents. We women are built for great things.

Happy Birthday, Grace! We hope to change the tech world as you have.
